Motivation Letter for University Example

A motivation letter for a degree programme answers a different question from a job cover letter. The committee is not asking whether you can do a job, but whether you will make good use of the course and finish it. The example below is from a business graduate applying for a master's in data science.

Motivation letter: MSc Data Science, entry September 2027

Dear Members of the Admissions Committee,

I am applying for the MSc in Data Science at Westbridge University. I graduated in Business Administration in 2025 and have since worked as a junior analyst at a retail company, where I realised that the most interesting questions in my job were the ones I did not yet have the methods to answer.

My bachelor's thesis looked at why online shoppers abandon their baskets. I collected data on 12,000 sessions from a partner shop and used logistic regression in R to show that delivery cost displayed late in checkout was the strongest predictor. The shop changed its checkout page and the abandonment rate fell by 9%. The project showed me both how useful statistics can be and how much I still had to learn about it.

At work I now build weekly sales forecasts in Python, and I have completed online courses in machine learning and SQL to prepare for this programme. What I want from a master's is the depth that self-study cannot give: a proper grounding in statistical learning, and the chance to work on real datasets under supervision.

Your programme appeals to me because of its applied research track and the Data Science Lab's work with public-sector partners. I would like to write my thesis on forecasting demand for public services, which connects directly to that work.

Thank you for considering my application. I would be happy to provide any further information the committee needs.

Yours faithfully,

Ana Popescu

Why this motivation letter works

  • The first paragraph explains why she wants the degree in terms of a real problem she met, not a general passion for the subject.
  • The thesis paragraph proves she can already do research: a question, a method, data and a result.
  • She shows preparation (Python, online courses) and is honest about what she still needs, which is exactly what a master's is for.
  • The paragraph about the programme names specific features, so it could not be sent unchanged to another university.
  • The tone is formal but direct. Committees read hundreds of letters and value clarity over flourish.

How to structure a motivation letter for university

1. Why this subject, why now

Open with the experience, question or moment that led you to the programme. Keep it concrete and short.

2. What you have done so far

Your thesis, projects, research, relevant work or courses. Describe one in detail rather than listing all of them.

3. Why this programme

Courses, research groups, teaching staff, partnerships or the structure of the degree. Show that you read the programme page carefully.

4. What you will do with it

A thesis idea or a career goal, stated briefly. Committees want to see that you have a direction, not a fixed plan.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Opening with a quotation or with "Ever since I was a child…".
  • Repeating your transcript. The committee already has it.
  • Praising the university in general terms ("prestigious", "world-class") instead of naming what attracts you.
  • Ignoring the word or page limit. Many programmes set one, and going over it suggests you did not read the instructions.
  • Sending the same letter to several programmes with only the name changed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a motivation letter and a cover letter?

A cover letter accompanies a job application and shows you can do the work. A motivation letter accompanies an application for a study programme, scholarship or exchange and explains why you want to study that subject there and how you will use it.

How long should a motivation letter for a master's be?

Follow the programme's instructions first. Without a limit, aim for one page, or at most two, roughly 500 to 800 words. Many universities state a word count, and staying within it matters.

Who should I address a motivation letter to?

To the admissions committee or the programme coordinator named on the programme page. "Dear Members of the Admissions Committee" is a safe formal greeting when no name is given.

Can I use the same motivation letter for several universities?

You can reuse the parts about yourself, but rewrite the paragraph about the programme for each one. Committees notice quickly when a letter could apply to any university.
